Alice's Story

Alice M. Manke, of Onekama, passed away on Aug. 25, 2017, at home, following a long battle with cancer. She was born April 5, 1928, at the family home in Maple Grove Township, Kaleva, the tenth of twelve children of Emery and Hilda (Harju) Hilliard.
Alice attended the Kaleva School and graduated as Valedictorian and class president of the class of 1946. She married Donald Schimke on May 3, 1947. He preceded her in death on Feb. 24, 2000. She later married Edwin Manke on Sept. 15, 2001. Edwin preceded her in death in May, 2012.
Alice had been employed by the A&P Food Store, Kroger, and Hamady Food Stores in Manistee before her retirement in 1983. Because of her love and respect for the elderly, she enjoyed caring for several ladies in their homes after that, including her dear aunts, Ida Lahti and Lois Mitchell. She enjoyed meeting people and worked at the Manistee County Fair in various capacities, where she was also a long-time exhibitor, being chosen "Homemaker of the Year" and "Super Gardener."
Alice enjoyed cooking, baking and entertaining. Her hobbies were her lovely flower gardens, sewing, church work, the Onekama Guild, and her precious grandchildren. She served in various capacities, including, president and vice president of the Ladies' Aid Society of Trinity Lutheran Church, Onekama, where she had been a member since 1948, as well as being on the Altar Guild, Lutheran Women's Missionary League, and other committees. She was an associate member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Arcadia, since 2001. Alice enjoyed spending her winters in Florida.
Alice enjoyed spending time with, and is survived by her children, Dennis (Lynn) Schimke, of Muskegon, Suzanne (Rodney) Cyr, of Bear Lake, Kevin Schimke, of Manistee, and Sherri (Joe Heindlmeyer) Miller, of Murrells Inlet, South Carolina; grandchildren, Christopher (Amanda) Schimke, of Milwaukee, New Berlin, Wisconsin, Philip Frain, of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Ashley Miller, of Grand Rapids, Cassandra Miller, of Charleston, South Carolina and Joshua Schimke, of Grandville; great-grandchildren, Sean and Gwen Schimke, of New Berlin, Wisconsin; her very dear sister, Agnes Schimke, of Onekama; her dear friend and companion, Robert Courneya; her sisters-in-law, Betty Hilliard, Marilyn Hilliard, Margaret Fredricks, Jean Hilliard, Norma Schimke, Jeanne (Schimke) Firman; brother-in-law, Richard Schimke, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and godchildren.
In addition to her husbands, Alice was also preceded in death by her parents, Emery and Hilda Hilliard; her brothers, Arthur, Leonard, Eli, Earl, Warren (Marvin), Ernest, Edwin, Herbert (Warner), Russell and Oliver (as an infant) Hilliard; sisters- in-law, Mary Hilliard, Evelyn Hilliard, Amanda Hilliard, and Margaret B. Hilliard, Ina (Margaret) Hilliard; brothers-in-law, Raymond Schimke and Robert Schimke.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11a.m., Friday, Sept. 1, 2017, at Trinity Lutheran Church, in Onekama, with the Reverend Timothy Selim officiating.
Interment will follow in the Onekama Village Cemetery in Onekama. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 31, 2017, at the Terwilliger Funeral Home in Kaleva.
Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church or to the American Cancer Society.
The Terwilliger Funeral Home, in Kaleva, is in charge of arrangements.
