Barbara H. Hancock Barbara H. Hancock, 101, passed away July 30, 2018 at Kalkaska Memorial Assisted Living. She was born in Seattle, Washington, on June 25, 1917 to the late Francis A. and Ada J. (VanVranken) Hancock.
She attended elementary schools in Montana and graduated from the Butte Montana High School in 1935.
During high school and following graduation Barbara worked at the Butte Credit Bureau.
She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Western Montana State College and later a Master of Arts degree from San Francisco State College.
Barbara began her teaching career in a one-room rural school in Montana and continued teaching in Dutton and Billings, Montana. Later she taught in Vallejo, California. She taught a summer course in art at Western and later a course in language arts at Sacramento State College. She worked 19 years as an educational consultant in the Nevada, Placer and Sacramento Offices of Education until retiring in 1975. She was a member of the California Educational Association, the National Educational Association (NEA), Delta Kappa Gamma and Chapter WC, PEO in Roseville.
She enjoyed retirement in the Santa Cruz and Sacramento, California, areas before moving to West Lafayette, Indiana, in December of 1998. Barbara moved to The Village of Bay Ridge in Traverse City in November 2002 and later to Kalkaska Memorial Assisted Living.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents; an infant brother, William; and her sisters, Virginia (Roland) Post and Betsy (Reinhardt) Schuhmann.
She is survived by three nieces, Andrea Bagoon, Alice (Paul) Bishop and Martha Schuh and their families, Sam (Kimberely) Bagoon, Aimee (Kevin) Nelson, Todd (Pamela) Bishop and Erika (Kurt) Buhring; two great-grandnieces; and five great-grandnephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Barbara's memory to the World Wildlife Fund.
