Born Sept. 20, 1918 in Adrian, she was the daughter of William and Vera McDermott (Hartman). On July 4, 1935 in Traverse City she married Arthur D. Wheelock.
Betty was formerly employed by the Armour Estate located on Long Lake. She worked at various other jobs, including Olsen's Food Stores for 16 years.
For 33 years she lived on the Murray Farm on the Old Mission Peninsula, otherwise known as the Ridgewood, now known as Old Mission Point Park. Betty and Arthur were actively involved with and enjoyed square dancing and loved to teach others how to round dance.
She is survived by her sons, Warren (Kay), of Traverse City, and Don (Jean), of Cedar; 13 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Arthur; a sister, Eileen Bendokos; her daughter, Patricia Shumsky; and son, Howard Wheelock.
A memorial service will take place on Jan. 19, 2018 at 11 a.m., with visitation one hour prior, at the Reynolds Jonkhoff Funeral Home. Betty's final resting place will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
