Bernice's Story

Bernice Gray, of Frankfort, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2018 at the Maples.
Bernice was born in Grand Blanc, one of five children, to Solomon and Pearl Wagner on Sept. 25, 1922. She graduated from Grand Blanc High School, where she attended from kindergarten through high school.
Bernice married her high school sweetheart, Floyd "Ted" on July 22, 1944 in Detroit, he preceded her in death on Aug. 9, 1993. They raised two sons while living in Marion, Indiana for 23 years where Floyd worked for Fisher Body and she was employed with the Credit Union at the Dana Corporation.
Upon retirement they moved to Frankfort, where they enjoyed playing golf and fishing. She also enjoyed sewing, playing cards and doing puzzles.
For many years, she split her time between the summer home in Frankfort and winters in Port St. Lucia, Florida. She also enjoyed traveling aboard visiting New Zealand, Australia, Alaska and Spain.
Bernice was a member of Frankfort Congregational Church and the ladies league at Crystal Lake Golf course. She was secretary, treasurer of the Benzie County United Way for six years 1980 through 1986. She also volunteered at Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital for 10 years.
She will be remembered by her family and friends for her devotion to her children and grandchildren, her sense of humor, her sweet tooth, her competitive spirit and love of games, her unyielding faith, her unwavering determination in the face of difficulties, and her unmatched kindness and love for others.
Bernice is survived by son, Denny (Shirley) Gray; two grandchildren, Holly Gray and Wyatt Gray, all of California; also, daughter-in-law, Trilby Gray, of California.
She was preceded in death by her son, David; parents; husband of 49 years, Ted; two brothers, Richard and Francis; and sister, Beatrice.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 28 at First Congregational Church of Frankfort with Pastor Dinah Haag officiating. There will be a visitation one hour prior to the service.
Arrangements are by Jowett Family Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
