Calla's Story

Text size

Calla May Rogers (Smith), 89, of Hendersonville, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at Elizabeth House Hospice on Dec. 19 with her loving daughter, Martha, by her side. Calla was born Dec. 26, 1927 in Rockford, Illinois, to Harry and Louise Smith.
A devout Christian, Calla's faith in God made her a role model for her family and others around her. Both of two brothers became pastors and two of her nephews.
Calla and her late husband, Bob, made their home in Bloomfield Hills and raised four children before retiring to Traverse City in 2004.
True to her selfless and giving nature, Calla, for many years, volunteered at both Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak and Munson hospital in Traverse City, touching so many lives with her kindness.
Calla's greatest joy was spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her love of children was unparalleled, and she would stop in her tracks to marvel at the sweetness of a child.
She is survived by her sister, Louise; children, Cindy (Fred), Bob (Elaine), Martha (Tom) and Carl (Mary); grandchildren, Tracey (Jon), Joe (Annie), Kelly (Corwin), Charlotte, Emma, Lucy and Fritz; and great-grandchildren, Corbin and Sam.
Donations in Calla's name may be made to Emanuel Lutheran School in Asheville, North Carolina.
