Constance Joan Newell

March 23, 1943 - December 12, 2018

Constance Joan Newell Born March 23, 1943, dear Connie died in her husband's arms on Dec. 12 at 7:30 a.m. After years of illness, periods of peace became more frequent in her final days. Her recognition and love of others continued until her final breath.
She is survived by her loving husband of 36 years Peter Newell and Kitty Kong and Baby, her loving cats. In 1984 they moved to Kingsley and together had a fun and adventuress life, where they loved to watch nature and feed animals. Connie loved to make Pete drive her around so she could take pictures and post them on Facebook for entertainment.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Ronald and Joyce Wilson; and sons, Thomas, 8 years old, and James Harcourt, 5 years old, who died in an airplane crash in 1974 near Coral on their return from Disney World. Her ensuing years of grief shaped her compassion for all people that face terminal illnesses.
Connie graduated with a Bachelor of Science in education and served as an registered at the State Hospital, Mercy Hosital in Cadillac, Osteopathic Hospital in Traverse City and later for an oncologist in Traverse City, where she started a support group called Cancer With Some Life In It. In partnership with Richard Brower, she helped produce, write and edit the 1984 film "Cancer Confrontation: A High School Experience" that helped remove some of the social stigmas of cancer. In this film, Traverse Central City High School students met and followed the trials of a 35 year old man diagnosed with terminal cancer.
A prolific writer, she wrote many true stories about her nursing experiences, but when she wrote and published her stories in her newspaper, The Good News Magazine, featuring the people of Fife Lake, Kingsley and Buckley, she sometimes had fun twisting the truth.
Connie was thankful for the care she received from her caretakers, family and friends through her final days.

I cherish the time when Connie and I wrote back and forth, sharing life stories and experiences. She made me laugh out loud. . . and cry.
