David's Story

Text size

David Earl Hébert, age 64, died Wednesday, April 26, in Joyfield Township.
He is survived by his wife, Anne; sister, Betsy Nowak (Gene), of Frankfort; brother, Paul Hébert, of Houston, Texas; niece, Melissa Freeman (Vince); and great-niece and nephew, Bradley and Morgan, all of Houston, Texas. He was a loving husband, brother, son and friend.
Having been born in Houston, he spent most of his life in Texas until the move to Benzonia in 2012.
After college he earned two master's degrees, one in counseling. His wisdom and gentle spirit enabled him to work with children struggling with life's extra challenges. He was a tender man with an uncanny ability to understand young people.
David loved to tell a story and was good at it. Possessing a gift for turning a tale with a straight face, he kept people in stitches.
He was a devoted Christian who loyally taught an adult Sunday school class, where his extensive knowledge of the Bible was appreciated and where "aha moments" often surfaced.
In his spare time he found meaning in daily prayer, baseball, fly fishing, camping, walks in the woods and spending time with family. He had a passion for reading, seeing a good movie and going to two favorite restaurants, the Cherry Hut in Beulah and in earlier days, the Hook, Line and Sinker in Dallas, Texas.
When his sister and brother-in-law, Betsy and Gene Nowak, moved to the area David delighted in having family close by, and he often spoke with his brother, Paul, in Houston.
Although David had many gifts that he gave freely and lovingly, his own struggles could not be overcome and he took his own life.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 6, at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, 8190 Lincoln Road in Beulah. A reception will follow at the church. All are welcome to attend and celebrate David's life.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Association of Play Therapy, Inc., 401 Clovis Ave., Suite 107, Clovis, CA 93612; or Monastery of Christ in the Desert, PO Box 270, Abiquiu, NM 87510.
