Donald's Story

Text size

Donald Frederick Benson, 82, of Buckley, passed away March 23, 2017 of cancer. Don was born on Dec. 31, 1934 to Harry and Florence Benson.
He grew up on a farm in Antioch Township. Don was the third child, eldest son, of seven siblings. After graduation, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and was a Tank Commander, stationed in Fort Knox and Germany. Don also worked at Keeler Brass, Fisher Body and on the car ferry before starting a Water Well Drilling business in 1966. Don Benson Well Drilling assured folks far and wide in Northern Michigan were "in water" and many people knew and trusted Don to solve their well problems. Don remained active servicing the vast customer base of his business for over fifty years. And, we suspect, the phone will continue ringing for Don long after he's gone.
Don Benson and Jerry McNitt were the little league baseball coaches that instilled the fundamental skills into the players of the Mesick High School baseball team that ultimately won the State Championship. Don had a unique skill set. If ever stranded on a deserted island, with few materials, Don would be the one he could craft solutions with few resources, and it always worked! Don was a mechanical genius and could fix anything. Don enjoyed people and was always eager to offer assistance. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, golfer and bowler. Don always enjoyed playing cards, farming and wood working. He will be missed by many.
Don is survived by his wife, Carolyn; son, Mitchell (Sue) Benson, of Kenosha, Wisconsin; daughter, Michelle (Steve) Myers, of Madison, Wisconsin; step-son Alex Mesler, of Buckley; step-daughter, Holly (Brad) Hoekenborf, Traverse City; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; siblings, Rhoda Stanton, Max (Karen) Benson, Irving (Carole) Benson, Karen Goodale, and Edward Benson; several nieces and nephews; and many other loving family members and friends.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Florence Benson; sister, Ruth Taser; ex-wife Pearl Evans Benson; brother-in-law, Donald Stanton.
A Celebration of Don's Life will be held on Saturday, April 8, 2017 at 3 p.m. at the Mesick Amvets Club.
