Doris's Story

Text size

Doris (English) Kell, born Aug. 5, 1919 in Golden Pond, Kentucky, passed away on March 12, 2018 in Howell. She was the daughter of Jefferson and Dora English and sister of Robert English, who preceded her in death.
In 1941 she graduated from Michigan State Normal College (now known as Eastern Michigan University). Following her graduation she pursued a teaching career for the Melvindale-Northern Allen Park School District, teaching first grade initially and retiring from Dasher as a seventh grade language arts teacher.
On June 23, 1945 she married Ben Peter Kell, who preceded her in death. They made their home in Dearborn, where they raised their family before retiring to Benzie County.
She is survived by her children, Kathleen Maurer, Dr. Robert (Vicki) Kell and Doreen (John) Morrison; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was an active member of the Frankfort United Methodist Church for many years. She also participated in the Periwinkle Garden Club, each spring working hand in hand with third graders and planting a beautiful garden for others to enjoy. While briefly living in Brighton she was also a member of their garden club, working on the garden outside the post office. She worked actively with the Frankfort Chapter of P.E.O.
Anyone who tasted her fried chicken knew she was a great cook. She loved life on the Platte River in Honor and at Michigan Shores overlooking Betsy Bay. Evenings found her sipping a martini with five marinated olives. Hers was a life well lived.
Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Benzie Shores District Library in Frankfort.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
