Dr. James's Story
Dr. James "Pat" Patrick Callison, 64, of Harrison, passed away suddenly at his home on Budd Lake Sunday, Aug. 20, 2017. Pat was born April 20, 1953 in Springfield, Missouri, the son of James Roe Callison and Helen Louise (Blackburn) Callison.
Pat moved to Traverse City in 1967 and graduated from Traverse City High School in 1971. He then enjoyed his years at Michigan State University before entering dental school at the University of Michigan, where he graduated in 1978. He was then commissioned in the United States Public Health Services and served with the rank of Lieutenant Commander on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation in Lame Deer, Montana.
He was a ski bum in Colorado before moving to Harrison in 1982, working at and eventually purchasing the Harrison Family Dental Clinic. In 1985 he built a home on Budd Lake, where he met his wife and eventually raised his children. On May 17, 1986 in Lansing, Dr. Callison was united in marriage to Tamyra Marie Treadway.
Pat spent many of his early years sailing in Grand Traverse Bay, eventually trading his sailboat for a motorized boat when his daughter started walking. He was a passionate skier and avid outdoorsman, passing his passions onto his daughters. He was drawn to the Western part of the U.S., taking his family on vacations skiing and hiking in the mountains and at national parks. He loved to travel exploring the U.S. and beyond. He especially looked forward to yearly elk hunting trips with his friends at his cabin in Colorado and deer season in Michigan. He was a fisherman and was equally as happy trolling for muskie and casting for bass as he was fishing in the ocean surf on the Gulf Coast of Florida.
Dr. Callison always strived to provide the best care to his patients, whom he thought of as an extension of his family. He was an active member of his community, serving on the City of Harrison Planning Commission, member of Clare Church of the Nazarene, the ADA, the MDA, the AGD, the Moose, The Harrison Sportsmans Club and had a role in the Budd Lake Association. He participated with the organization His Helping Hands of Clare County. He was compassionate and participated in multiple mission trips to provide his skills to the persecuted Karen People of Burma/Myanmar.
Pat was a self-described husband, son, hunter, fisherman, dentist and friend. He was loyal and loving to his friends and family and was deeply loved by those who knew him.
