Elsie Alma (Bastert) Walton, 89, of Grand Rapids, passed away at home Dec. 26, 2017.
She was born Nov. 1, 1928 in Quincy, Illinois, to Frank and Clara Bastert. Elsie was one of nine children raised on a dairy farm in Camp Point, Illinois.
She was a graduate of Camp Point High School and Knox College in Illinois, where she was a music major.
In 1950 she married Robert Walton, and they had 62 wonderful years together. They moved to Bushnell, Illinois, where her husband was president of the Farmers and Merchants State Bank.
Elsie taught elementary school in Prairie City, Illinois, until they started a family. She loved being a devoted wife, mother to five boys, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She helped co-direct the choir at the Presbyterian Church in Bushnell, Illinois, and gave piano and voice lessons.
She and her husband retired to Crystal Lake in Beulah, where they had vacationed with their family as members of the Congregational Summer Assembly (CSA). They were members of the First Congregational Church in Benzonia, and Elsie sang in the choir there and at the CSA in the summer.
They enjoyed a very active retirement with family and friends at the lake and in Green Valley, Arizona, playing tennis, skiing, sailing and traveling.
She was a member of PEO for 67 years.
She will be remembered for her lovely singing voice, her excellent cooking, her love for her family and her kindness to all.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert; and siblings, Ray, Clarence, Francis, Betty, Frank, Albert and John.
She is survived by a sister, Claramae; sons, Steve, Gary (Kathy), Mark (Julie), Dave (Kathy) and Hugh; grandchildren, Colleen, Brett, Molly, Levi, Steven and Leslie; and great-grandchildren, Teagan and Kallie.
She has been cremated and a family memorial service will occur next summer at the Congregational Summer Assembly with burial in the family plot at Crystal Lake Township Cemetery.
Contributions may be made in her name to Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois, or the First Presbyterian Church in Bushnell, Illinois.
