Frances Margaret Keyes Frances Margaret Keyes, 94, passed away on Sept. 28, 2018 at the Grand Traverse Pavilions. The daughter of Kate Clarke and James Irl Keyes, she was born in the rural community of Hickory Grove on a farm outside Richmond, Missouri.
She attended a one-room school house through the eighth grade and graduated from Richmond High School, where she was a cheerleader and the lead in the school play. She graduated from Central Business College in Sedalia, Missouri, later taking courses at Bradley University in Illinois and the University of Michigan. She completed a two-year program in medical records science and was certified as an Accredited Record Technician.
In 1943 Fran moved to Texas, where she met and married William H. Boyd, an Army Air Force navigator cadet. As was customary with GI wives, Fran followed her husband wherever he was stationed and found work on the bases in civil service positions. After the war they settled in Illinois, where they started a family and Bill completed his schooling and became a Presbyterian minister.
In 1954 they moved with three young daughters to Detroit, where Bill served the Cadillac Boulevard Presbyterian Church. Years later as a single working mother, Fran moved her family to Grosse Pointe. She was employed as the director of medical records at Doctors Hospital 33 years and typed surgical dictation and reports for other hospitals after hours to support her family and send her girls to college.
In retirement Fran served as a docent at the Detroit Historical Museum, ushered at the Fischer Theater and Masonic Temple and volunteered at the Grosse Pointe War Memorial. She attended Jefferson Avenue Presbyterian Church 60 years and was a member of the English Speaking Union and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She spent many years researching family genealogy and traveled to 48 states and many foreign countries.
Fran cared for aging friends and always made room at her table for those who had no family during holiday celebrations. She was loved by many and will be greatly missed for her kind and gentle nature.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Charles; her daughter, Crystal (Boyd) Wendland; and her grandson, Douglas Whan Jr.
She is survived by her daughters, Sheryl (Boyd) Langdon and Susan Boyd; her granddaughter, Sarah Mellen; and her great-granddaughter, Sarah Grace Reilly.
Interment will be at Hickory Grove Cemetery, Richmond, Missouri.
