Francis R. Walker, 88, of Elk Rapids, passed away at his home on Thursday, Dec. 21, 2017. Francis was born on Jan. 13, 1929, in Litchfield, Minnesota, and was raised there.
After graduating from the University of Minnesota, he married the former Barbara Link. Following marriage, he received his Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Detroit.
After a period of service in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, he began his marketing career. His job took him many places overseas, and he was instrumental in the development of the airbag.
The couple moved to Detroit around 1962.
Francis enjoyed bird watching, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and Art Institute, was an avid photographer and was also very active in coaching baseball, softball and hockey.
After the death of his wife in 1984, he retired in the late 1980s and moved north to Elk Rapids, where he was an active member of the community for over 25 years.
Most importantly, he cherished his summers with his grandchildren visiting and spending time with him.
He is survived by his children, Greg, Jim (Sue) and Judy (Bob) Racette; grandchildren, Sam, Andy, Matt and Allie Walker, Rachel and Jake Racette; and sister, Kathryn Wright.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Jamie; and three brothers.
Cremation has taken place, and his ashes will be interred in the memorial garden at St. James Episcopal Church in Birmingham.
Memorial contributions are appreciated in his name to the charity of your choice.
