He was born in Indio, California, on Feb. 26, 1942, and died of natural causes on Dec. 23, 2017 in Traverse City, where he was a longtime resident and where he worked at the local post office for over two decades. He was son to Sidney and Jessie Walker and brother to Cheryl Walker Ward.
Gary attended University of Southern California and graduated in 1963. He served two tours of duty from 1966 to 1968 in Vietnam as a first lieutenant.
He had a passion for sports cars and was an amateur formula racer. He enjoyed the outdoors and was known for long hikes, rock climbing, kayak trips and camping in Southern California, Colorado and Michigan. He was also an avid sailor with dreams of attempting the Great Loop.
Gary is survived by his daughter, Shelley Walker Davey; son, Maitland Walker; and stepchildren, John McBride, Charles McBride and Lisa McBride Roberts.
A memorial service will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. on Jan. 28, 2018 at Grand Traverse Yacht Club, 13615 S. West Bay Shore Dr., Traverse City, MI 49684.
