Gordon B. Williams Gordon B. Williams, age 97, of Traverse City, passed away Oct. 6, 2018 at 8:40 a.m.
He was born Oct. 21, 1920 in Midland County, the son of Walter and Sylvia (Welsh) Williams. In 1942, he married Reva Breu, the love of his life. They were inseparable for 72 years until her passing Oct. 2, 2014.
Gordon was a 1938 graduate of Alma High School and went on to earn his teaching degree from Central Michigan University in 1942. He served 2 years in the United States Navy during World War II. In 1967, he completed his master's degree in counseling from Western Michigan University.
During his career in education he taught woodshop and drafting. He coached football and started gymnastics programs and coached at several schools including Olivet College. Throughout his teaching career he taught at Marion, Weidman, Pinconning, Olivet and Bellevue. Gordon began his counseling career in Benton Harbor and retired from Holt in 1983. Gordon has resided in Traverse City since 1995.
Gordon is survived by two daughters, Sandra (Merrill) Harvitt, of Traverse City, and Renee (Lemont Betts) Toomey, of Benton Harbor; six grandchildren, Jennifer (Wayne) Johnson, Adam Harvitt (Genell Sivek), Sara (Tom) Toth, Megan (Mike) Crawford, Summer Toomey and Jamie Toomey; and 13 great-grandchildren, Bailey, Lauren, Cameron, Madison, Katie, Andrew, Hannah, Natalie, Elijah, Ethan, Jaylen, Christian and Caden; and by many life-long friends and former students.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and two brothers.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Oct. 11, 2018 at 10:30 a.m., at Lux and Whiting Funeral Chapel, 156 W. Saginaw, Breckenridge, MI 48615, with the Rev. Gary Hogue of the Traverse City Congregational Church officiating. Interment will follow in Ridgelawn Cemetery, Breckenridge. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Munson Hospice House.
