He was discharged in 1955 and moved to Big Rapids, where he enrolled in the School of Pharmacy at Ferris State College under the GI bill and graduated with honors in 1958.
They moved to Alpena, where Bud worked as a pharmacist for seven years before moving to Elk Rapids in 1965, purchasing Frank's Drugs and changing the name to Hatch Pharmacy. Bud and Peg operated the corner drugstore in Elk Rapids for 29 years before selling the business in 1994.

He and Peg entertained often, opening their house to anyone who showed up for great food and a good time.
The family would like to express gratitude and appreciation to the special care Bud received in his final days at Cherry Suites Assisted Living Facility in Elk Rapids and Heartland Hospice.
