Jack Howard Dorie passed away peacefully with his family at his side, Nov. 13, 2017 at Traverse Manor at the age of 97. He was the loving husband of 60 years to Agnes, who passed May 2, 2010. He was loved by many and will be greatly missed.
Jack was born April 19, 1920 in Sault Ste Marie to John and Daisy Dorie. The family then moved to Ishpeming where Jack spent his early childhood. After the death of his mother, he and his father moved back to the Soo and lived with his grandparents.
He often told us the story about his grandfather working at the Soo Locks and that on one visit his grandfather put him on his knee and let him "pull the lever" to open the lock for a boat to pass through. It was a memorable moment for him.
As a young man he enjoyed riding his Indian Motorcycle and spending time with friends. He took flying lessons but was just shy of getting his license when the war started. He drove the city bus in the Soo for several years and then moved over to the Soo Creamery where he drove a delivery truck.
It was while delivering to an ice cream shop that he met Agnes Brood. They were married May 20, 1949 and in 1951 they moved to Traverse City. Jack worked for Parsons Corporation until they closed in the early 70's. He then went to work for Chef Pierre until he retired.
He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, camping, and touring the Chain of Lakes by boat with his brothers-in-law.
Jack is survived by his two children, Donna Lynn (Doug) Marker and Robert Charles Dorie (Karen);and four grandchildren, Geoffrey & Meryn Marker, Rachel (Ben) Watson and Megan (Jon) Heit.
The family would like to thank the staff at Traverse Manor for the loving care and kindness given during his time with them. Thank you also to Heartland Hospice who were so kind and caring through his final days.
In lieu of flowers please send donations in his memory to Traverse Manor and/or Heartland Hospice. Funeral arrangements entrusted to the Covell Funeral Home.
