James's Story

James Robert Hoogesteger, 91, of Traverse City, passed away on Wednesday, March 1, 2017 at Munson Hospice House in Traverse City. Born on Feb. 14, 1926 in Grand Rapids, he was the son of the late Cornelius and Esther (Snyder) Hoogesteger.
James graduated from Wayne State University in 1951.
He married Dorothy Jane Congo on May 9, 1953 in Northville. James and Dorothy moved to Traverse City in 1958, where they made their home.
He was the co-owner and general manager of Mesick and Northern Engineering Firm, EMI and worked as a senior engineer for George Orpahn and Associates and for Con Edison in New York City. He joined the University of Michigan as a senior engineer in 1984 and worked there another 16 years.
James was a volunteer for 50 years in the Boy Scouts of America and was honored with the Boy Scouts' Silver Beaver award in 1974. He volunteered with the Wexford County EMS for 12 years. In 2000 James decided it was time to retire. In retirement, he served on the Traverse City Light and Power Board.
James is survived by his children, Robert James Hoogesteger, of Traverse City, Richard Neil Hoogesteger, of Hopkins, Minnesota, Susan Maree (Frederick) Keelsar, of Cedar, and John Charles (Denise) Hoogesteger, of Jacksonville, Florida; and grandchildren, Reagan Maree Hoogesteger and Frederick James Keelsar.
James was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dorothy.
Funeral services will be held on March 18 at 2 p.m. at Wolfe-O'Neill Funeral Home in Kalkaska. Visitation will begin at noon. Burial will be at Boardman Township Cemetery in the spring.
