Joan Julia White, 98, of Traverse City, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2017 in Dearborn at the home of her son, David. Joan was born in Detroit to the late Andrew and Hazel (Stites) Johnson.
She married the late Elmer E. White II on Dec. 20, 1937. Together they raised two sons, Elmer III and David.
Joan grew up on the Old Mission Peninsula on her parents' cherry farm. She attended a one-room grade school and lived in Traverse City most of her life.
She was a member of the Central United Methodist Church since 1933.
Surviving Joan are her sons, Elmer E. White III, of Ann Arbor, and David A. White, of Dearborn; two grandchildren, Kimberly McCaffery and Lesley Gagnon; four great-grandchildren; friend and caregiver, Sydney Newman; and many other family members and friends.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Elmer II; and sisters, Barbara Hallberg and Patricia Daugherty.
Visitation will take place on Monday, Nov. 6, 2017, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. Funeral services celebrating Joan's life will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2017, at 11 a.m., with additional visitation beginning at 10 a.m., in the Central United Methodist Church in Traverse City. Burial will be next to her husband in Acme Township Cemetery.
