John R. Shaw, 86, of Arcadia, died Monday, Feb. 20, 2017 in Frankfort. John was born in Flint on July 6, 1930 the son of the late Arthur P. Shaw and Arlisle H. (Schlegel) Shaw. John married Elizabeth "Betty" A. Wade on Dec. 18, 1948.
He graduated from Flint Central High School and received his associate's degree from General Motors Institute.
As a youth John was a member of Boy Scout Troop 65 and later served as an adult leader of the troop.
John worked at Chevrolet (in the Hole) as a tool and die maker for a number of years before becoming supervisor in charge of the Chevy Show and Design Department. He oversaw the building of cut away vehicles and engines which appeared throughout the United States at all of the large car shows and various dealerships. His crews restored several vintage automobiles that are displayed at various automotive museums plus built vehicles for Grace Kelly, Lucille Ball and other personalities. Cars for "Safetyville USA" in Flint were manufactured by John's group.
Later he was transferred out to the Van Slyke Road Prototype manufacturing facility. There he oversaw the development of prototype assembly lines for new vehicles prior to being installed in the GM factories around the country.
After retirement John and Betty moved to Arcadia. John served on the Arcadia Township Fire Department as a firefighter and later as chief. He was also a member of the Lions Club of Arcadia, various township boards and township marina operator.
After Betty died in September of 1986 he married Martha, of Flint, in April 1988 and continued to live in Arcadia until his death.
Surviving are wife, Martha; children, Arthur (Agnes) Shaw, Nancy (Chuck) Willette, JoAnn (Steve) Butler, Jean Wolfe, William (Oz)(Paula) Shaw, Jane (Randy) Jones, Tracy (Chuck) Detweiler, Dawn (John) Johannes, Denise Reinwasser and Doug (Diana) McBride; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sisters, Virginia Harper and Patricia (Skip) Coucke; and sister-in-law, Joan Shaw,
He was also preceded in death by his brother, Donald Shaw.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, 2017 at Sunset Hills Cemetery, 4413 Flushing Road, Flint. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Arcadia.
