John's Story

John Elmer Sy, 89, of Kalkaska, passed away on April 29, 2017. He was born to the late Herman and Ida (Brecht) Sy on January 20, 1928 in Saginaw. John was in the US Army, serving during the Korean War and received the Bronze Star. He was a dedicated family man, a loving husband and father and was always willing to help others. John worked as a builder for over 40 years and also enjoyed hunting and fishing. He will be remembered as a man of faith, and has been a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church since moving to Kalkaska in 1969. John is survived by his wife of 53 years; Bernice, children; Kimberly (John) Reed of Copperas Cove, TX, John E. (Rebecca) Sy of Noblesville, IN and Cindy Lu Sy of Mesick, grandchildren; Jamie, Jacob, Jessica, Alyshia and Mason, and his sister Dorothy. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother; Walter and 3 sisters; Helen, Elsie and Ester. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, May 3, 2017 from 2:00pm to 7:00pm at the Kalkaska Funeral Home. The funeral will be Thursday, May 4, 2017 at 1:00pm, final visitation beginning at 12:00pm, at St. Paul Lutheran Church. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. Memorial Contributions may be made in John's honor to St. Paul Lutheran Church. Arrangements entrusted to Kalkaska Funeral Home.
