Joseph J. Homminga

Joseph James Homminga, of Gulliver, formerly of Cadillac and Traverse City, passed away Monday, June 4, 2018 at Michigan Medicine in Ann Arbor. He was 74.
Joseph was born Feb. 22, 1944 in Cadillac to Raymond Franklin and Florence Elaine (Miller) Homminga.
He attended St. Ann Catholic School and graduated from Cadillac High School before attending seminary in Wisconsin.
Mr. Homminga served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War from 1966 to 1967.
He worked as a heavy equipment operator at the sand plant in Harrietta and was also a camp counselor at Camp Torenta in Cadillac, where he taught archery, riflery and swimming. Mr. Homminga retired in 2003 from St. Francis High School in Traverse City after teaching for over 12 years. He had a heart for teaching and won several prestigious teaching awards during his career. From 1980 to 2010 he presented Worldwide Marriage Encounter weekends with his wife, Mary.
Mr. Homminga enjoyed spending time outdoors hunting and camping. He also enjoyed a variety of sports including football, softball, pickle ball, hockey and bowling.
He was currently a member of St. Francis de Sales in Manistique and was longtime member of St. Ann Catholic Church in Cadillac.
His grandchildren adored him and he loved spending time with them.
On Aug. 28, 1965 in Cadillac at St. Ann Catholic Church he married the former Mary Bolick, and she survives him along with their son, Brian James (Dawn) Homminga; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; siblings, Larry (Pauline) Homminga and Patti Stitt; brother-in-law, Wayne Reitz; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Joseph Michael in 1984; a brother, Paul Homminga; and a sister, Kay Reitz.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 12, 2018, at St. Ann Catholic Church in Cadillac, with the Reverend Fr. Michael Janowski serving as celebrant. Burial will be at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Cadillac. Friends may meet the family from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Peterson Funeral & Cremation Services in Cadillac.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Francis de Sales building fund of Manistique.
