Juanita's Story

Juanita L. Shanks, 86, of Glen Arbor, formerly of Empire and Ludington, died Oct. 14, 2017, at the Tendercare Health Center of Leelanau.
Juanita was born in Big Rapids on Sept. 12, 1931, the daughter of the late Vernon and late Ethel (Fredrick) Stanley.
Following high school, she spent a great deal of time dedicating herself to the hotel, retail and restaurant industry mainly in the Empire and Ludington areas. She really enjoyed interior decorating.
Juanita was a devout Christian and member of four congregations during her lifetime. She was a former member of the Empire Methodist Church, who will be conducting services.
Her life revolved around her four children, 15 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren as well as her dedication and love for Christ. In more recent times, she became a youth minister and touched the lives of many.
Juanita is survived by her son, Glenn Tom (Kathy) Aylsworth, of Glen Arbor; her sisters, Nancy Bancroft, of Grand Rapids and Patsy Bloodgood, of Bloomington, Indiana; her brothers, Joseph Stanley of Marquette, Richard Stanley, of Westland and Victor Stanley of Citrus Springs, Florida. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her previous husband, Glenn Aylsworth who she married in 1947; her husband, Claude "Bud" Shanks who she married on Dec. 4, 1971 in Scottsdale, Arizona; her children, Gladys Aylsworth, Warren Aylsworth and Gregory Aylsworth; both her parents; as well as her sisters, Betty Rodgers, Virginia Vernees and Caroline Norton.
A funeral service will take place at the Reynolds Jonkhoff Funeral Home on Thursday Oct. 19, 2017 at 11 a.m. with visitation one hour prior. Pastor Russell Logston will officiate. Juanita's final resting place will be Empire Maple Grove Cemetery.
