June Elizabeth Rockwell Brownlee, 93, of Suttons Bay, died Jan. 18, 2018 in Bradenton, Florida with her daughters, Sandy and Nikki and good friends, Pat Guinan and Ann Newland at her side.
She was born July 2, 1924 in Yakima, Washington, to the late Lyle and Anna (Rowley) Rockwell. On Nov. 21, 1943, June married Winston "Win" Earl Brownlee in Sunnyside, Washinton, he preceded her in death in 1988.
June had several jobs throughout her life but by far her most favorite was working for the U.S. Postal Service in the Suttons Bay office. June retired in 1985 to spend time with Win and do some traveling.
Win and June moved to Suttons Bay in March 1946 with their infant daughter, Sandra. Win ran a local dairy bar next to the Bay Theater. June would make all the pies sold in the dairy bar.
In 1954, the family moved into their present home on St. Marys Street and have lived there ever since. June loved her home and was very active in redecorating and painting any wall that was in her way. She also reupholstered any piece of furniture that came her way. She loved to knit, needlepoint, sew and made sure her girls always had the nicest clothes to wear to school. Every person in her family had several sweaters that she had made just for them. June also loved to care for her yard and in the summer you could find her sitting in a patch of myrtle weeding out the grass or up in her garden hoeing, watering and harvesting the crop she grew. June was also a various reader and supported, volunteered and read half the books in the beautiful Suttons Bay Library.
June is survived by her daughters, Sandra Erickson, of Suttons Bay, Nikki Harris, of West Virginia; son, David Brownlee, of Traverse City; four grandchildren, Heather Fenkel, of New Jersey, Paula Erickson of Suttons Bay, Ryan Doyle of Las Vegas and Michelle Gordon of Traverse City. June also has four great grandchildren, Samuel and Anna Fenkel of New Jersey, Jackson, and Emma Doyle, of Las Vegas; and by, but not least, three grand dogs.
June was preceded in death by her son-in-law, David Erickson, of Suttons Bay; her brothers, Edwin and Joaquin Rockwell, of Benzonia.
A family memorial service will take place at a later date at Homestead Cemetery, Benzonia.
