Larry's Story

Text size

Dr. Larry J. Schumacher, D.C., 74, of Kalkaska, passed away on Aug. 16, 2017 in Tacoma, Washington. Dr. Schumacher was born on March 22, 1943 to the late Shirley and Lawrence Schumacher.
He was born and raised in East Jordan, and on Nov. 23, 1963 he married Charlene (Arnott), also from East Jordan, and enjoyed over 43 years together until she passed in 2007. They moved to the Detroit area, where he worked as a gravel train hauler until 1972, at which time he changed careers and attended Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa.
Upon graduation in 1975 with his Doctor of Chiropractic degree, he moved his family to Kalkaska. Larry provided chiropractic care to the Kalkaska and surrounding communities for over 37 years. During this time it was the relationships that Larry built and friendships made that gave him purpose.
In the same way he provided for his community, at home his family was equally important.
Larry was a member of the Michigan Association of Chiropractors, past member of Kalkaska Rotary Club and former Kalkaska Fair Board member.
Larry is survived by his three children, Kareen (Michael) Oosterhart, Shawn (Lisa) Schumacher and Jada (Jeff) Leek; grandchildren, Kendra (Kyle) Denholm, Jared (Aleshia) Oosterhart and Ryan and Tyler Schumacher; two great-grandchildren; siblings, Darrel, Marty and Beth Ann; and his significant other, Sharon Munoz.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wives, Charlene and Linda.
A memorial gathering will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 9, 2017 in the lower level of the Kalkaska Church of Christ. Plan for boots and blue jeans and plenty of storytelling, all things Larry loved.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Larry's honor to the Kalkaska Baby Pantry or Oklahaven Children's Chiropractic Clinic.
The family is being served by Kalkaska Funeral Home.
