The fiercely independent, loyal, stubborn spirit that was Leslie D. Messing left this earth on Jan. 4, 2018. She was born May 22, 1949 in Grand Rapids to Joseph and Doris (Dafoe) Messing. She moved to Traverse City in 1961 and attended St. Francis.
Leslie worked as a keyliner, retiring from the Record-Eagle after more than 25 years.
She was a woman who wasn't easily swayed by what others thought she should do. Life wasn't always easy for her, but she would defend her family, her beliefs and those she loved to the end.
She is survived by her daughter, Melissa (Perry) Cartwright; granddaughters, Emma and Abigail; siblings, Lizbeth Messing, Joseph (Ceonna) Messing, Mark Messing and Lynn (Preston Williams) Messing; and many nieces and nephews.
Per Leslie's wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of her life will be held in the spring.
Those wishing an expression of sympathy are encouraged to direct contributions to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 22478, Oklahoma City, OK 73123.
Please share your thoughts and memories of Leslie with her family by way of her online guestbook at www.reynolds-jonkhoff.com.
The family is being cared for by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
