Lorraine Olga Smeltzer (nee Manke), 94, of Arcadia, passed away March 6, 2018 in Frankfort. Lorraine was born Dec. 13, 1923 in Arcadia the daughter of Theodore and Ida (Kutsman) Manke.
Lorraine graduated from the Arcadia Township Unit School in 1941 and later attended County Normal School. Lorraine was especially proud of earning her Master of Education from Central Michigan University later in life.
Throughout her 40-year career as an elementary school teacher in Benzie and Manistee counties, Lorraine touched the lives of thousands of students and parents.
Lorraine was enamored with studying genealogy and loved to travel.
Lorraine is survived by children, Gail (Don) Nugent, Nina Hess and Doug (Karen (Perry)) Smeltzer; grandchildren, Steve (Kerry) Nugent, Amy (Bob) Smale, Shawn (Brian) Lindenborn and Brent (Robin) Anthony; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Lucille (Walter) Richley; as well as many other extended family members.
Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William "Bill" Frederick; great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Idell Lindenborn; and seven of her siblings.
A funeral service will be conducted Saturday, March 10, 2018, at 2 p.m., at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah. The Reverend Benjamin Schultz will serve as officiant. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. and continue until time of service at the funeral home.
