Mark's Story

Text size

Mark Andrew Koval, age 56, of Buckley, surrounded by his family, passed away peacefully on April 12, 2017. The second of five children, he was born in Detroit to Frank and Margaret Ann (Brennan) Koval.
Mark had a brilliant mind and a deep, open heart. He loved to work, to problem solve and help others. Mark was a man of action who always stopped when he saw someone in trouble.
In 1982 he married his true love, Cindy Lou Rogers, whom he first met at high school band camp.
Mark loved snow shoeing, kayaking, camping, history, reading, cooking, building, driving and discovering new back roads, blue highways and so much more.
Never one to take things for granted, he always remained grateful for his wife, his family, his community of Traverse City and the beauty in which he lived.
While serving in the United States Army he was awarded two Army Achievement Medals for exceptional leadership, foresight and judgement, and inspiring personnel to exemplary action.
In 1995 Mark moved up to Traverse City to start Overhead Door of Grand Traverse. At the beginning there was just an empty warehouse, one metal folding chair, a telephone and Mark. From there he and Cindy turned it into the thriving successful business that it is today.
Mark served the Traverse City community as a member and president of the Traverse City Optimist's Club, where he was the pivotal person behind the annual "Duck Race" fundraiser for local youth organizations. Mark was an ambassador, valued member of the operations team and member of the board of governors for the National Cherry Festival.
Mark is survived by his loving wife, Cindy Lou Koval; his brothers and sister, Jim (Betsy) Koval, Tom Koval, Bob (Mary Leslie) Koval and Kathy (Tom) Gawrych; and also by his nieces and nephews, Benjamin, Matthew, Christopher, Jonathan and Meghan Koval, Ethan and Lauren Koval and Emily, Grace and Andrew Gawrych.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, April 20, 2017, at 11 a.m., with visitation held one hour prior, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. Bob Koval will be the officiant.
Memorial contributions may be made to Traverse City Optimist Club and the Cherryland Humane Society.
