Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Kremer, age 96, of Lansing and Traverse City, died peacefully with her daughter at her side on June 20, 2017 at Grandhaven Living Center. Mary was born in Detroit on Aug. 3, 1920. She was raised by her parents, Frances (Decker) Brayton and Hazen Brayton, in Lansing.
Mary graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1939. In addition, Mary took some music and voice lessons at Michigan State following graduation. Singing and music were a very important part of her life.
Mary worked in various clerical positions following high school, her first being in the state capital building and finishing at the Selective Service for the Federal government.
Throughout the years, Mary volunteered at the St. Lawrence Hospital as a USO volunteer and as a volunteer at St. Francis Church in Traverse City.
Mary married her childhood playmate, Robert Kremer, on March 5 1946; they had 50 loving years together, with Robert passing just two weeks before their anniversary. Together Mary and Robert adopted two children, Roseann Kremer and Raymond Kremer.
Robert and Mary were members of Holy Cross parish, St. Francis Catholic Church and Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church upon her death.
She is survived by her two children; four grandchildren, Carl (Kristin) Johnson, Cynthia Kremer, Robert (Michelle) Kremer and Ira (Mikayla) Stemen; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bruce and Gertrude Kremer; and three nieces, two nephews, their children and grandchildren. She is also survived by five great-grandchildren, Makenzie Priest, Isabella Bartolomeo, Elijah and Emma Kremer and Evan Foster. Also surviving are numerous cousins, especially Rita (Bappert) and Ken Gemalsky, Charles and Kathy Bappert, Howard and Eunice Brayton, Rosemary (Decker) Stokkers, Barbara and Jeff Caddell; and special friends, Rebecca McDaniel, Richard and Jeannette Johnson, John Stemen and Madeleine Newman.
To Mary, her God, her family, her music and her friends were everything that made her life wonderful.
The family of Mary "Betty" Kremer would like to extend special thanks and appreciation to all the caregivers that provided excellent care and support.
Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. on July 7, 2017 prior to the memorial Mass at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 3815 S. Cedar St., Lansing, with Fr. John Byers presiding. A funeral luncheon will be provided immediately following in the church Family Center. Interment will follow at the mausoleum at St. Joseph Cemetery Lansing.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Mary may be to the St. Vincent DePaul Society, the Alzheimer's Association, Immaculate Heart of Mary Food Pantry or St. Francis Food Pantry, Traverse City.
