Mary's Story

Mary Lou Murphy, 88, of Old Mission Peninsula, passed away on July 6, 2017 with her family by her side. She was born Feb. 8, 1929 in Benton Harbor to Carl Raymond and Mary Analu Burg.
She graduated from Benton Harbor High School in 1946, attended Michigan State University and received her license in cosmetology.
Mary Lou married Robert Lawrence Murphy in 1949.
Surviving Mary Lou are her husband, Robert; their children, Debra (Rob) Holt, Robert M. Murphy, Kerry (Kathy) Murphy and Karen (Steven) Nichols; nine grandchildren, Otis Hart, Anna Bouton, Chelsea Holt, Shawn Murphy, Eric Murphy, Sara Murphy, Erin Murphy, Daniel Murphy and Meghan Nichols; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Carl Robert Burg.
Mary Lou and her mother operated a beauty salon together until Mary Lou's move to Traverse City, where she joined the staff at the Park Place Hotel Beauty Salon. Later she opened her own shop. After retirement she enjoyed her family the most and knitting, sewing, gardening, golfing and reading.
At Mary Lou's request, a private family service will be held and burial will be at Ogdensburg Cemetery on Old Mission Peninsula.
