Michael Patrick Keating, 59, of Traverse City, passed away Sunday, Nov. 5, 2017.
Mike was born on Jan. 17, 1958 in Muskegon, to the late Waldo and Marcia (Holbrook) Keating. He moved with his family to Traverse City in 1971, attended Immaculate Conception Middle School and graduated from St. Francis High School in 1977. After high school, Mike worked in retail around Traverse City. He is remembered by many as having worked at 7-11 and most recently at Oleson's. He enjoyed his job as time keeper for the Traverse City West JV football team and for the boy's and girl's freshman basketball teams. He looked forward to every game and loved spending time with the athletes and staff at West.
Mike loved sports. While an avid Minnesota Vikings fan, he followed college and high school football and basketball. Mike tracked the top 20 teams as well as the unknown, the long shots and the underdogs. He had his favorites and enjoyed engaging in friendly arguments with those whose loyalties differed from his. He loved music and collecting CDs. Mike also loved playing card and board games with his family. He was a formidable opponent in any game of friendly competition. He enjoyed walking, bike riding, bowling, miniature golf and pool. Mike had a great sense of humor, always finding something funny in TV shows, movies and everyday events.
Mike was a great guy and a gentle soul. He was friendly and respectful to all. He worked hard, enjoyed his daily routines, and saw the good in life every day. He loved his family and was devoted to his parents. Mike was one-of-a-kind who left us too early. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Surviving Mike are his siblings, Patricia (Charles) Brumbaugh, Deborah Anderson, Linda (Joseph) Watt, Mary (Timothy) O'Callaghan, Margaret (John) Anderson, Laura Keating (Steve Bayne), and Robert Keating (Joseph Klingman); 13 nieces and nephews; six great-nieces and nephews; and many cousins and friends.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., on Thursday, Nov. 9, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home with a rosary being recited at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., on Friday, Nov. 10, 2017 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Traverse City West Athletic Department.
