Nelson's Story

Nelson L. Kirby, 100, of Central Lake, passed away on Sept. 30, 2017 at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility. He was born on Jan. 5, 1917, in Central Lake Township, the son of Richard and Ethel (Empey) Kirby.
Nels was employed by General Motors for 38 years, was a Scout Master for Boy Scouts, an avid Detroit Tigers Fan, no matter if they won or lost. He also loved to golf. He and his brother Lloyd, were instrumental in helping to develop the back nine of the Antrim Dells Golf Course.
Nels was a life member of the Central Lake Lions Club and long time member of the Central Lake First Congregational Church.
He is survived by three children, Gail Kirby, of Central Lake, Linda (Gary) Best, of Davison, Ray (Carol) Kirby, of Lake Ann; six grandchildren, Debbie (Mike) Ewald, Greg (Lynn) Kirby, Dawn (Paul) Beauchamp, Rod (Heidi) Kirby, Eric Fant, Mike (Kelly) Fant; 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Fern; a great-grandson Logan Fant; two brothers, Lloyd and Jack Kirby; and a sister, Beatrice Edwards.
Memorial services will take place on Friday, Oct. 6, 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church in Central Lake. Pastor Gary Bekkering will officiate.
Interment will be in Southern Cemetery, Central Lake Township.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church Parish Nurse Program.
Arrangements are being handled by the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.
