Norberta's Story

Text size

Norberta June Hatley passed away on Feb. 24, 2017 at home surrounded by her loving family. She was born on Oct. 9, 1935 to Clara May (Culliton) and Edwin Fred Gibbons in Kalkaska and was raised on their family farm with her siblings, Patrick, Linda, Carl and Clara May.
Norberta had an early interest in nursing and teaching. She served as a substitute teacher at the Excelsior Township "one-room" country school serving kindergarten through eighth grade students. She later ran an in-home day care center and became an adopted "grandma" for those who needed encouragement and a listening ear. A stay-at-home mother of five daughters was her main occupation.
Her personal interests included camping, gardening, natural health and herbs, crafting, crossword puzzles, Scrabble, genealogy, reading, and Bible study.
Previous marriages include Peter Luinstra, Marion Shepler and Rutherford J. Hatley, all of whom preceded her in death.
Survivors include her brother, Patrick (Denise) Gibbons; daughters, Clairann (Calvin) Haney, Connie (Mike) Moyer, Laurie (Walt) Skrine, Tamra (Rudy) Velfling and Tedina Hatley; and niece, Sharon (Barry) Becker. She was grandma to Calex, Catrina, Katie Rowe, Cynthia, Jenna, Jeramy, Christopher, Mark, Shawn, Michelle, Jodee, Diane, Jimmy, Barbara, Barry, Brandon and Brady; and great-grandma to Ashely, Rebecca, Matthew, Prudance, Jeramy Jr., Aubrey, Debra, Benjamin, Danielle, Alison, Jassica, Millie, Lyndsay, Nikole and Tim. She is also survived by many cousins, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be on Monday, March 13, at 2 p.m., at Wolfe-O'Neill Funeral Home. Visitation will begin at noon until the time of service. Pastor Bill Kuiper will officiate. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery in the spring.
