Our dear mother, Oral Matthews, age 93, was welcomed into the arms of her loving Lord and Savior on Feb. 27, 2017, surrounded by her children. Oral was born in Akron, Michigan, on Aug. 20, 1923 to Roy and Laura (Feit) Odgen.
Following her graduation from high school she served our country as a member of the Women's Army Air Corps from 1942 until 1945. She achieved the rank of Corporal.
She married Hoyt R. Matthews in 1945.
Mom loved the out of doors and she loved camping. Her hobbies included baking, needlepoint and drawing.
She was a loyal, loving and compassionate woman.
Oral is survived by her daughters, Diane Parvizi, Laura Matthews, Nancy (Ben) Teeples, Rose (Steven) Gensler and Marcia (Dustin) Gensler; sons, Dean Matthews and Harold (Tina) Matthews; and son-in-law, Parviz Parvizi. Oral is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and one great great-grandchild.
Oral was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Hoyt Matthews; sisters, Leila Griffin, Lucille Pertler, Garnet Chittenden, Beth Wilson, Virginia Cooper and Vivian Ogden; and brother, Walter Ogden.
A visitation for Oral will take place on Friday, March 3, 2017, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, from 4 to 7 p.m. The funeral service will take place at 3 p.m., with visitation one hour prior to the service, Saturday, March 4, 2017, also at the funeral home. Graveside services will take place at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens immediately following the service.
