Paul's Story

Text size

Paul Tegel, 68, of Elk Rapids, passed away peacefully at his home on Sept. 26, 2017.
Paul was born on April 21, 1949, in Chicago, Illinois, to his parents Paul and Virginia (nee Wollenhaupt) Tegel. Paul was raised in Cary, Illinois along with seven siblings. Paul married Janet (nee Holl) on May 20, 1972. In 1978 Paul and Janet built a house on East Bay in Elk Rapids, where they raised four sons and Paul lived the rest of his life.
Paul had a gentle, steady nature and was a careful listener. He had a curiosity about people and a knack for asking the right questions. He liked to know where people came from, where they were, and where they were going.
Paul enjoyed watching his sons play sports and never missed a baseball, basketball, or soccer game or golf match. He was a natural writer and enjoyed the weekly crossword, despite his belief that each week's puzzle contained at least one clue that was "a little too cute".
Paul was a talented musician who refused to be pigeonholed into a genrewhen someone asked what type of music he played, his answer was invariably "it's just good music". He often played guitar on Saturday mornings at Java Jones coffee shop in Elk Rapids. Paul released three albums of original music: Water in This Desert (2006); Helicopter Rides (2008); and The Thorn Amidst the Rose (2010).
Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Paul Anthony Tegel, Sr., and Virginia Tegel. Paul is survived by his wife, Janet; sons, Sam (Sarah) Tegel, Will (Karen) Tegel, Ben (Julie Swoveland) Tegel, and Mike (Jeorjina) Tegel; grandchildren, Luke, Nicholas, Melina, Eliana, and Emelyn; siblings, Mary Tegel (Terry Bequette), Terry Henderson, Betty Tegel, Geoff Tegel, Virginia Tegel, Rob (Amy) Tegel, and Amy (Kevin) Beausir; brother-in-law, Steven (Kathryn) Holl; and sister-in-law, Holly Tegel.
A memorial gathering will be held at the Tegel home at 10510 Lakeshore Road, Williamsburg, MI, 49690, on Saturday, Sept. 30 from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Memorial donations may be directed to the Lakeland Elementary School Music Fund, 707 E. Third St, Elk Rapids, MI 49629, on behalf of Paul Tegel.
