Randy R. Day

May 04, 1976 - September 24, 2018

Randy Robert Day, 42, of Traverse City, passed away while kayaking on Sept. 24, 2018.
Randy was born May 4, 1976 at Leelanau Memorial Hospital of Northport, the son of Robert C. Day and Donna K. (Bailey) Day.
Randy was born with gasoline in his veins, with a love for racing and ready with a helping hand to anyone in need. He was born into racing, attending races when he was 6 months old, but sleeping through the race. Randy would see the large driver's numbers on the side of the cars and that started his fantastic mathematical skills.
He won his first checked flag when he was 4 years old at a tricycle race at the Northern Michigan Speedway. Randy started racing cars at 15 years old until present time. He, his father Robert, his mother Donna and uncle Doug supported him at thousands of races and the over 2000 checkered flags Randy and Robert won.
Randy spent 8 years in the NASCAR All American Racing series, he also raced on local tracks in Michigan, Indiana and Ohio. He loved meeting people, he loved helping others. He also had a passion for snowboarding and kayaking.
Randy, much to the dismay of his crew, would help other drivers with their car problems, even if they were racing against him. He had parts in some Up North Zombie movies, most notably Thaw of the Dead. Randy was active in getting the Indigenous People Day in Traverse City officially recognized.
Randy is survived by his parents, Robert C. and Donna K. Day; his siblings, Christine (Larry) Tueller, Kristen Harthorn; his aunts and uncle, Karen Zimba, Sandy Turner, Doug Day, Lori Bailey; and many loving extended family members.
A celebration of Randy's life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13 with the family greeting friends at 11 a.m. at the Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay. Friends are encouraged to share their stories of our dearest Randy.
Memorial donations may be directed to the Day family.
Condolences may be shared with Randy's family at www.martinson.info.
Arrangements are with Martinson Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Leelanau.

rest in peace!

I never met Randy in real life but heard about him through mutual acquaintances. His reputation was as someone who was always willing to help, no matter what that help may have cost him. The story of him helping to fix the cars of people he raced against was new to me but fit in so well with what I had heard about him. My heart goes out to the Day family during this difficult time. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.

My family would like to express our grief and sorrow with you and keep you in our prayers. We lost a son on April11, 2015, to misdiagnosed severe pneumonia. He left his wife and a boy and girl,4 and 2. I started racing in 1970 at Berlin and Kalamazoo. I spent most of my time at Berlin, but, living in Wayland, I would venture down to Kalamazoo once a month. Made a lot of friends there. My friend Scott Seaton lived in Ludington and he would haul to Berlin every week to race in the Super Sixes. We lost Scott about 10 years ago in a Sprint Car crash at Auto City. I retired in 2000 and one of our boys drives now. He is an identical twin to our son Chad who passed away. We have not raced since Cha...d passed away. It is like the devil reached in and ripped out your heart and threw it away, to lose a son or daughter for that fact. And again, please know you are in our thoughts and prayers and may God bless you. Sincerely, Scott and Suzanne MacIntosh and family.Read more

My grandsons, Matthew and Andrew, never met Randy but they loved seeing Bob and Doug. Matthew had just turned 16 and got his 1st car, our retired Blue Blazer. On his way to school on M-22, a TC bus driver ran the stop sign at the end of Carter Road and ran into Matthew and his brother, Andrew. Fortunately they were not hurt, just shaken up but the Blue Blazer was totaled! They got another Blazer. This one was same year, black but engine in Blue Blazer was better. That is how Matthew met Bob and Doug. They switched engines out and as a result, Matthew has a lasting friendship with Bob and Doug. He loved watching them work and seeing the race car and I’m sure he heard a few good sto...ries about Randy. Know that Randy and the Day family will be in our prayers. Having read about Randy will give us a lasting memory of a fine son and nephew. Our sincerest sympathy. The Belangers.Read more
