Richard W. Pascoe

Richard Wayne Pascoe died May 13, 2019 in Bellaire. Richard was born March 21, 1931 to William and Agnes (Pavek) Pascoe in Traverse City.
He was the youngest of three children, with siblings, William and Evelyn (Kline) Pascoe. He spent the majority of his life in his hometown of Elk Rapids, where he graduated high school.
Upon graduation he joined the United States Army in February of 1952. In recognition of his service he was awarded the Korean Service Ribbon, the United Nations Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
Following his service Richard attended Northern Michigan College, where he earned his associate's degree in 1957. He then attended Aquinas College, earning his bachelor's degree, and finally finished at the University of Michigan, where he received his master's degree in education.
Richard had a passion for education, teaching multiple languages, including Latin, German and French at Northern Michigan College from 1966 to 1988.
When he wasn't teaching he was traveling. Richard was an avid explorer, spending winters in the south of France and summers on Mackinaw Island - he had fond memories sitting on the deck of the Murray Hotel as well as biking around the Island.
Later in life, Richard thoroughly enjoyed spending his days at T.J. Charlies. John and Denise Heeke created a "second home" for him there at their restaurant. On any given day you could find him completing a crossword puzzle, reading a book or heckling locals and staff. He was a fixture at the restaurant and will be sorely missed. Richard was a devout Catholic who loved attending the Latin Mass at Sacred Heart Church of Mancelona for many years.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, William and Agnes Pascoe; and both of his siblings, William and Evelyn.
Richard is survived by his loyal and trusted friend, Zachary Petoskey, who had been his caregiver for the past five years; Joyce and Mary Jo Pavek, of Mason City, Iowa; nephew, Will Kline, of Casablanca Grande, Arizona; John and Denise Heeke, along with the rest of the staff at T.J. Charlies; Sam Chile; Father Weber of Sacred Heart Church, of Mancelona; and Susan Middleton of Mancelona.
On behalf of Richard, a sincere "thank you" goes out to the staff of Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility in Bellaire.
A visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m., with funeral immediately following at 11 a.m., Friday, May 17, 2019 at Sacred Heart Church, of Elk Rapids, 143 Charles St., Elk Rapids. A luncheon will follow at T.J. Charlies. A committal service with military honors will take place on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Sacred Heart Cemetery, 7320 Cairn Highway, Kewadin.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Covell Funeral Home, of Elk Rapids.

I took 2nd year French from Mr. Pascoe at NMC. His opening words the first day of class were in French. Translation: "If you understand what I am saying, please raise your hand." Then, in English, "If you didn't raise your hand, I invite you to sign up for 1st year French." I liked him from that moment on. He was a dedicated teacher with a wry sense of humor.

Richard will always be fondly remembered for his wit and dry humor. Thank you for the honor of knowing him!
