Robert "Bob" George Allen passed away on Feb. 17, 2018 at Hawthorn Cottage/G.T. Pavilions in Traverse City. Born in Chicago in 1920, he moved with his parents to Harbor Springs in 1934, graduated from University of Michigan in 1940, and married Mary Eleanor Strand, of Petoskey in 1941.
During World War II, Bob was a Naval Officer, stationed in the North Atlantic on the Destroyer Escort, the Robert E Perry. After the War, he embarked on a 40 year career with General Motors. Bob was passionate about the beauty of Northern Michigan, travels with his wife Eleanor, physical fitness, many good friends, canine companions, and ever faithfully rooting for U of M. "Go Blue!" But all of that paled in comparison to his love for his family. Bob will be remembered for having an outgoing and funny personality and a generous and very big heart.
He was preceded in death by Eleanor in 2008; and son, Jeff in 2009. Bob moved to Traverse City in 2008 for his final frontier. He enjoyed new friends and activities, including volunteering at the Father Fred Foundation. Surviving Bob are daughter, Martie, in Traverse City; three grandchildren and their families, Will with Gaia and Elka in Cedar; Kristi with Matt, Madelyn, Sam and Annie in Portage; and Kathy with Bill in Kalamazoo. He was a favorite uncle to Dustin, Eric Jon, Shelly and Mark. Bob's ashes will be spread in the Bay View Memorial Garden in June, to be with his wife Eleanor's and other loved ones. The family wishes to express deep gratitude for his excellent care at Hawthorn Cottage, as well as from Hospice of Michigan in his final four months.
For those desiring to honor Bob with a memorial contribution, please consider the Little Traverse Bay Humane Society at 1300 W Conway Rd., Harbor Springs, MI 49740.
