Sharon Vanderlind, 54, of Frankfort, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, July 6, 2017. Sharon, a member of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, was born Sept. 15, 1962 to Lucy (Ance) Mitchell and the late James (P.J.) Mark Mitchell Sr.
Sharon studied horticultural at Ferris State University. During this time, she spent her summer working as a team leader for the CETA program, where she led young teens in activities such as rope courses, white water rafting, and obstacle courses, while teaching them several basic life skills.
She went on to have her own landscaping business. Her work led her to beautiful landscapes in Chicago and the Grand Traverse area. Sharon's work and passion was a testament to her outspoken attitude, insatiable wanderlust, good humor, and overall outgoing nature, which friends and family alike will always remember her to lending a helping hand to anyone in need, but she is also remembered for her thirst for adventure. She was a frequent participant in the Beulah Winterfest Outhouse Races on behalf of the Corner Pub, and was a member of the Frankfort Eagles. She also spent much of her time tubing, kayaking, skiing, and taking long drives "around the block", and countless other activities which she shared with her children, who were her greatest joy in life.
Sharon is survived, and will be dearly missed, by her mother; siblings, James (Jan) Mitchell Jr., of Manchester, New Hampshire, Kenneth and Charles Mitchell, of Frankfort and Elaine (Jeffrey) Meszaros, of Benzonia; her children, Emily (Adam) Firmingham, of Merrill and Leland Vanderlind, of Benzonia; several nieces and nephews and dear friends, Timothy Fitzgerald, John Vanderlind, and Jerry Carpenter. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Christine Mitchell; brother, Robert Joseph (Hot Rod) Mitchell; and close friends, Ricky "Stick" Krantz, and Lance Smith.
Visitation will take place at the Jowett Family Funeral Homes in Benzonia on Monday, July 10 from 6 a.m. until 8 p.m.
The memorial service will take place on Tuesday, July 11 a.m. at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. There will be a visitation one hour prior to the service.
Contributions in Sharon's name can be made to the Frankfort Eagles College Scholarship Fund.
