Stewart's Story

Text size

Stewart "Stew" John McConnaughey, 55, died unexpectedly in Phoenix, AZ, on April 26, 2017. He was born in Detroit, MI, on June 14, 1961, to Elizabeth McConnaughey and John Stewart McConnaughey. When Stew was a young boy, the family moved to Williamsburg, where Stew spent time on the family farm and attended St. Francis in nearby Traverse City, graduating in 1980.

He is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by two children, Tiffany, of the Grand Rapids area, and Thomas (TJ), of Portland, OR; a sister, Barbara (Al Thompson) of Traverse City; and three granddaughters.

Stew was a loyal fan of the Detroit Tigers and Lions, and he was not afraid to tell you so (sometimes to the chagrin of coworkers and friends). Additionally, Stew's love of Harley Davidson motorcycles developed at a young age. Throughout his life, Stew owned several bikes and always devoted the highest level of care to them, no matter the cost or the amount of time required.

Stew had an incredible work ethic, something coworkers at places like Lamar Advertising in Traverse City and Banner Health in Phoenix instantly noticed and constantly appreciated. He didn't just do the job; he did the job well and wouldn't quit until it met his incredibly high standards. This ethic, in addition to his appreciation for simple pleasures, will be deeply missed by family, friends and coworkers.

The family will host an informal gathering on their property in Mayfield Township, a place Stew spent many summers, on August 6, 2017, at 2 o'clock. If you wish to join them, the entrance (along Knight Rd) will be marked by balloons. Please bring your own chair and a story to share.
