The Rev. Dr. John's Story
The Rev. Dr. John E. Cermak, age 83, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2017. John was born to John W. and Frances E. (Middleton) Cermak on Jan. 4, 1934 in Northport.
John graduated from Bangor High School and soon went on to graduate from Albion College. John then pursued his eventual lifelong career as a minister by attending seminary school at Boston University's School of Theology. John went on to further his studies in seminary by receiving his doctorate degree in 1976 from Iliff School of Theology in Denver, Colorado.
John met his wife of 63 years, Adele L. Lent, while they were both teenagers, and they were married on Nov. 21, 1953.
In 1958 John started out his years as a pastor and minister at the Oakwood United Methodist Church in Kalamazoo. In 1966 John was then relocated to Okemos, where he was the minister at Okemos Community Church for 21 years. After serving in Okemos John was relocated again to the First United Methodist Church in Jackson for seven years until his eventual retirement in 1994 when John and Adele moved to Northport. While in Northport John was very active in the community, where he continued to assist with funerals and weddings and often was a guest minister at the Trinity United Church.
John was an avid hunter, fisherman and amateur hobby farmer. He loved working outside with his chain saw and cutting up wood.
John is survived by his wife, Adele; sons, Douglas (Jane Pearce) Cermak, of Onekama, Daniel (Rhonda) Cermak, of Parchment, and Matt (Kate) Cermak, of Interlochen; and his sister, Mary Betzoldt, of Adrian. John is also survived by six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service for John will take place at the Trinity United Church in Northport on Saturday, Aug. 12, 2017, at 11 a.m.
