William R. Burmeister passed away on Aug. 24, 2017 at the age of 86 while under home hospice care in Northport. Bill was born on March 15, 1931 in Republic, the son of the late Ervin and Violet (Zeober) Burmeister.
Bill grew up in a log cabin in the U.P. His early years were spent in the U.P. and Appleton, Wisconsin. The family moved to Lower Michigan in 1944.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1947 at 16 years old and spent three years in Korea and Japan.
After an honorable discharge Bill worked in a drug store as a sales person. In 1955 he opened his own drug store in Allegan, later closed the store in 1965 and moved to Leelanau County.
Bill found his serenity shack in 1976 in Northport. He enjoyed many years of the priceless gift of serenity, which he shared with others, helping them to see the many gratitudes in their lives. Later he started a lawn service, window washing and home security business.
Bill leaves behind his loving wife of 22 years, Janet; daughters, Glenda (Richard) Blanch and Christine (Art) Bauman; and stepchildren, Brian (Jenn) Kawa, Andrea (Anthony) Fera and James Kawa. He was the loving grandfather of 12 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
Bill was preceded in death the mother of his children, Marion; children, Wendy Roberts and Richard Burmeister; and his nine brothers and sisters.
You may have known him as Billy B, Bill, Bompie, Grandpa or Dad. Bill enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren in the summer and reminiscing on the story of Dog Man. His stories and memories will always be remembered by his loved ones.
A memorial service will be on Oct. 14 at 11 a.m. at Bethany Lutheran Church in Northport.
