William Edward Donner, age 89, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2017 at St. Ann's Nursing home. He was born in Leelanau County, on Oct. 11, 1927 to Edward Laurel and Helen Louise (Horn) Donner.
Bill grew up in the Suttons Bay area and graduated from Traverse City High School. He proudly served in the U.S. Army, where he was a Corporal and earned a Bronze Star in the Korean War.
He married Agnes Korson on June 20, 1953 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church at Gills Pier. Bill attended Michigan State University and worked for Michigan Milk Producers Association, from which he retired in 1992.
He was an active member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Sparta, helping with the Knights of Columbus and was a faithful member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Bill was known for preparing food at the church and driving the meals to God's Kitchen in Grand Rapids.
Bill is survived by his wife of 64 years, Agnes; his children, Mary and Carl Huisjen, Rene and Mike LaLone, Stephen Donner and Lisa Bruin; 10 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Max and Jack Donner; son, William G. Donner; and son-in-law, Donald Bruin.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held today, Sept. 2, 2017, at 11 a.m., with visitation from 10 a.m., at Holy Family Catholic Church, Sparta, with Monsignor Terrence Stewart officiating. Family met visitors on Friday, Sept. 1, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., at Hessel-Cheslek Funeral Home, with a prayer vigil service at 7:30 p.m. Interment will be in Idlewild Cemetery, Kent City.
