Yvonne Rosalie Banks died in her home in Honor, on May 1, 2017, surrounded by her family and her beloved chocolate Lab, Rita. She was 77 years old.
Yvonne was born on March 5, 1940 in Frankfort, to William and Bernice Dupries. She graduated from Traverse City Central High School in 1958 and attended Michigan State University before marrying her high school sweetheart, Harold Banks, in December of 1959. Harry joined the Michigan State Police in 1960, and they lived in Brighton, Houghton Lake, and Williamston, before settling in Cheboygan, where they raised their two sons, Brad and Nick.
Von worked for the Cheboygan Area School system, working in the board office, and as the secretary at East Elementary. Von and Harry spent every summer with their boys, lots of dogs and extended family at their cottage on Rennie Lake in Traverse City. After Harry retired from the State Police, they lived aboard their sailboat, Solitude, sailing through the Florida Keys and the Bahamas before returning to the Traverse City area. They enjoyed traveling every winter and explored all over the United States, living at times from Arizona to Florida, and both North and South Carolina, always returning for their Northern Michigan summers.
After losing her husband of almost 50 years in 2009, Von made a whole new life for herself, actively engaging with her church and the Benzie County community. She enjoyed traveling, going to her "exercise class", knitting and sewing, and she made many new friends along the way. She loved her grandchildren, her books, her dogs, and a cold beer with her lunch.
She is survived by her children, Brad Banks and his wife, Tracey and Nick Banks and his wife, Tamar; as well as her two grandchildren, Ethan and Madison.
A memorial service is scheduled for June 10, 2017 at 1 p.m. at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Beulah.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Yvonne's name to the Benzie Area Christian Neighbors (BACN), or the St. Andrews Church Cass Community Project.
