Barbara Joan Allen, of Traverse City, passed peacefully into the arms of our Lord at the Grand Traverse Pavilions with her son, John, by her side on April 7, 2017.
She was born Barbara Joan Valley in Traverse City to Clarence Joseph Valley and Olive (Stenabaugh) Valley on Feb. 10, 1931.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore Allen, in 2004.
Barbara moved to Flint with her parents and in 1948 came back to Traverse City, where she met her husband, Ted, and they married in 1949.
Along with her husband, Ted, they started the Long Lake Inn in 1967, owned the Cedar Lake Motel and built the Mayfield Inn in 1977, along with many rentals in the area.
Barbara was a lover of animals as can be attested to by the many stories told by her son over the years. Her heart was always with the underdog. Barbara was very generous to her friends.
Surviving family members are her son, John (Barbara) Allen, of Mesick; daughter, Valerie Allen Withrow, of Lajoya, California; grandchildren, Ted and Max Allen, of Buckley, and Chad Allen, of Kingsley; and great-grandchildren, Braxton, Demian, Jonelle and Gavin Allen.
