Barbara Jean Putney, age 59, passed away on Thursday, March 2, 2017 at Riversbend Rehabilitation Home in Bay City, where she had been a resident following an accident in 2004. She was born on Feb. 17, 1958 in Frankfort, the daughter of Kenneth and Charlotte (Case) Putney.
Barb grew up in Benzie County and graduated in 1976 from Benzie County Central Schools. She then attended and graduated from Central Michigan University with a degree in education. While at CMU, Barb played for the Women's Field Hockey team and is a member of their athletic hall of fame. Barb taught Physical Education at Farwell Schools and then Middle School. She also coached softball at Farwell. She loved to ski and taught skiing at Snowsnake Mountain and was on the ski patrol. In the summers, she spent hours sailing her own sailboat, "Wunderlust." Barb was a true free spirit.
She was a member of Blaine Christian Church and Clare Congregational UCC. She also was a member of the Eastern Stars at Farwell.
Barb is survived by her mother, Charlotte; and her sisters, Carolyn (Gary) Waterson, Kathleen (Gorden) Burns, and Janet (Rick) Maat; and a special friend, Arno Winkler. She is also remembered by 10 nieces and nephews; and 10 grand-nieces and nephews.
Barb was preceded in death by her father, Kenneth.
A service to celebrate Barb's life will be held on Saturday, March 25 at 2 p.m. at Blaine Christian Church at Putney Corners, with Rev. Robert Larimer officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Barb's name may be directed to the church. Burial will be in Blaine Township cemetery.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Riversbend and hospice of Bay City for their compassionate care of Barb.
