Blanche Marie (Sika) Urban, formerly of Interlochen, passed away peacefully in Frankfort on March 21, 2017 at the age of 93 with her family by her side.
Blanche was born in Karlin on Aug. 8, 1923 to Thomas and Steffie (Skoumal) Sika Sr. The only daughter with seven brothers, Blanche learned her hard work ethic from growing up and working on her family farm. It was there she met and married the love of her life, Jerry George Urban Sr., on May 4, 1941. Blanche and Jerry were happily married for 63 years. Together they had three children and lived and worked on their farm in the Thompsonville/Karlin area for many years before moving to their home on Green Lake in Interlochen.
Blanche was a homemaker who spent her life devoted to nurturing and caring for her family. She could always be found in the kitchen cooking or baking some of her family's favorite Czechoslovakian dishes and though many of us have tried to replicate them, they never quite taste like "grandma made them." Her home was always the center of many family gatherings and card games. Blanche was an avid card player, her favorite being euchre, up to the time she passed and even then, was never afraid to call you on your game. She and her husband, Jerry, were always on the go and never missed any of their grandchildren's school programs or sports games.
After the death of her husband, Blanche moved from King's Court to Bay Ridge apartments in Traverse City and later Frankfort Pines Assisted Living in Frankfort, where she made many friends and never missed a game of bingo each and every day.
Blanche touched the lives of many and will be remembered for her hard work ethic and giving nature. She was a shining example of what a good mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend should be.
Surviving are her three children, Jerry (Elizabeth) Urban Jr., Betty (Mike) Bishop and Judy (Noel) Schroeder; brother, Robert (Lois) Sika; grandchildren, Mike Bishop, Shelley Bishop, Mark (Beth) Urban, Melissa (Tim) Newell, Jason Schroeder and Sarah (Randy) Gum; 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild soon to be born.
Blanche was preceded in her death by her parents, Tom and Steffie Sika; husband, Jerry Urban Sr.; and brothers, Tom, John, Jerry, James, Edward and Joseph.
Her family would like to extend a special thank you to the Frankfort Pines staff that provided her a great last year of her life and the Hospice of Michigan team for all their comforting and compassionate care.
Per Blanche's wishes, cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will be held at a later date.
Gifts in memory of Blanche, if desired, may be made to Hospice of Michigan, NW103 Patient Needs Fund, 10850 E. Traverse Highway #1155, Traverse City, MI 49684.
