Carole's Story

Text size

Dr. Carole Mary Eberly passed away peacefully and unexpectedly Feb. 17 while on vacation in Mexico. Carole was born on Dec. 15, 1943 to Paul W. and Mary C. Walaskay. She grew up in Dearborn, Sao Paulo, Brazil, and Mexico City.
A graduate of Michigan State University's School of Journalism, Carole began her career as a general assignment reporter at the Charlevoix Courier. She then became news editor for radio station WHMI in Howell before being hired as a state capital correspondent for United Press International, where she covered all branches of government for more than five years. Carole started Eberly Press in 1977 and in 1979 she launched Michigan Journal, a statewide general bureau. In 1983 Michigan State University recruited her to teach in the School of Journalism, where she remained for 13 years. In 1994 she was interim editor of Michigan Medicine magazine (the official journal of the Michigan State Medical Society), and from 1996 to 1999 she was editor of Lansing City Limits magazine. Meanwhile, Carole earned her Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy from MSU. In 1995 Central Michigan University's Department of Journalism offered her a teaching position where she received tenure and a promotion. In 2000 Carole served as copy editor at the China Daily in Beijing.
Dr. Eberly won a variety of awards and honors, including MSU's College of Communications Arts & Sciences Outstanding Alumni Award in 1981 and the National Federation of Press Women's Communicators of Achievement for 2006, the group's highest honor.
She retired from CMU but not before meeting her beloved husband there, Dr. Charles Ebel, who preceded her in death. In retirement Carole lived in Elberta and Traverse City to be near her daughter, Jessica (Patrick) Sullivan, and her grandson, Henry. She spent her retirement years in a close and loving relationship with Jessica and Patrick and was a devoted grandmother to Henry, whom she deeply adored.
Carole traveled frequently with family and friends, most recently to the Women's March in Washington, D.C.
Carole is survived by her daughter; son-in-law; grandson; brother, Paul (Jinx Lucas) Walaskay Jr.; sister, Marianna (Tim) Erdmann; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and other beloved family members and friends.
A memorial reception will be held at a later date; please email jsullivan49686@gmail.com if you are interested in attending.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Planned Parenthood or the ACLU.
