Cecily Heafield Muse, age 96, passed away on June 10, 2017 at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. She was born at Garden in the Upper Peninsula to the Reverend Harold and Edith (Earp) Heafield.
Cecily graduated from Garden High School in 1939 and attended Michigan State Normal College (now Eastern Michigan University), earning a Bachelor of Science degree in 1943.
Three days after graduation she enlisted in the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (soon to become the Women's Army Corps). After basic training at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, Cecily attended photo lab school at Lowry Field, Colorado, and worked a short time in the photo lab at the Army Airfield in Newport, Arkansas.
In November of 1944 she was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant and began a physical therapy training program at Fitzsimmons General Hospital in Denver. Upon completion of training Cecily worked for 18 months as a physical therapist in various Army hospitals in the United States.
While working at Crile General Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio, she met Louis Edward Muse, a wounded serviceman who later became her husband. Cecily was discharged from the Women's Army Corps on June 4, 1946 shortly after being commissioned a 1st Lieutenant. On June 21 of that year she married Louis at the Valley Forge General Hospital Chapel in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania.
Cecily and Louis lived in Washington, D.C. for a short time before moving to Denver, Colorado, where they began a family. In 1953 they relocated to northern Michigan and settled permanently in Acme Township.
Cecily will be remembered for her love of animals, gardening and holistic health. She was an avid letter writer.
She is survived by her two children, Barbara (Steven) Bursian and Harry (Nancy) Muse; five grandchildren, Jennifer (George) Sloan, Michael (Angela) Burston, Kimberly (Jim) Burtis, Erin (Joe) Meyer and Harrison Muse; and 11 great-grandchildren. She also leaves many nieces and nephews.
Cecily was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Louis; four brothers, Kenneth, Keith, Clyde and Gordon Heafield; and sister, Noreen Schafer.
A memorial service for Cecily will be held at 3 p.m. on Monday, June 19, 2017 at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home with a visitation one hour prior.
