David Matthew Coville, age 66, passed away at his home on Monday, May 8, 2017. David was born Nov. 27, 1950 in Queens, New York, to Larry and Gloria (Bell) Coville. He moved north to the Traverse City area after graduating from Stetson University.
David spent his career as an accountant - always an expert with numbers - but he most enjoyed his volunteer work with Inland Seas. He started with the organization teaching on the boat for several years, taking a break for a bit and then returning to work behind the scenes. In this role he used his incredible organizational skills to help Inland Seas run smoothly.
He also did outreach to schools and school-age children, offering scholarships, hoping to foster the same sort of love for the water that he felt. He was happiest while on the water.
David also had a "rare" sense of humor and was always telling jokes (mostly inappropriate) and putting his own spin on CNN News headlines. He loved his daughters and was in touch with them throughout each day, often texting a headline and then his own spin on it.
David is survived by his daughters, Julie (John) Anderson, of Traverse City, and Kimberly (Grant) Krasemann, of Florham Park, New Jersey; granddaughter, Jessica Murray, of Lansing; and brother, Skip (Karen) Coville, of Portland, Oregon.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Larry and Gloria (Bell) Coville.
A memorial service will be planned at a later date.
Memorial contributions in memory of David may be made to Inland Seas Schoolship, PO Box 218, Suttons Bay, MI 49682 or by visiting schoolship.org/donate.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Covell Funeral Home of Traverse City.
